An unusual Tubular Stalactite Apophyllite Formation from Maharashtra, India, featuring a slender mineralized core decorated with transparent to translucent apophyllite crystals. Mounted upright for display, the specimen presents an elegant curved silhouette with impressive height and a dramatically crystallized surface.
The formation displays a pale icy-green to nearly colorless appearance. Numerous glassy apophyllite crystals project from the tubular core, including several prominent crystals with broad reflective faces and sharply defined geometric forms. A delicate microcrystalline coating covers much of the underlying structure, adding texture and soft sparkle between the larger crystals.
One end of the formation reveals a distinct circular opening surrounded by radiating crystalline growth, clearly displaying its hollow or tubular internal structure. This exposed cross-section is an especially interesting feature, providing a rare view into the architecture of the stalactitic formation. Small reddish-brown mineral inclusions and natural residue create subtle contrast while preserving the specimen’s geological character.
Measuring approximately 1.5 × 1.5 × 3 inches and weighing 37 grams, this compact mounted specimen offers excellent vertical presence. About Apophyllite
Apophyllite is the commonly used collector name for a group of hydrated potassium-calcium silicate minerals frequently found within cavities in volcanic basalt. Many specimens from Maharashtra are fluorapophyllite-(K), although precise species-level identification requires analytical testing.
Apophyllite is prized for its glass-like luster, transparent to translucent crystals, and distinctive geometric forms. Crystals may occur as sharply terminated prisms, blocky formations, pyramidal points, sparkling coatings, or complex clusters growing across earlier mineral structures.
Stalactitic formations develop when minerals accumulate around a suspended core or along a pathway through which mineral-rich fluids once moved. Continued crystallization can produce elongated, hollow, or tubular structures that are later coated by additional generations of crystals. The visible opening at one end of this specimen provides an excellent view of that unusual growth architecture.
Maharashtra’s Deccan Traps are internationally renowned for producing exceptional apophyllite and associated secondary minerals. Gas cavities within ancient basalt flows were later penetrated by mineral-rich fluids, allowing apophyllite, stilbite, heulandite, calcite, chalcedony, and other minerals to develop through successive stages of crystallization.
