An elegant Scolecite Crystal Formation from Maharashtra, India, featuring the slender crystalline structure and delicate appearance for which this zeolite mineral is admired. Its elongated form creates a striking natural silhouette, giving the specimen impressive visual presence despite its compact size.

Scolecite commonly develops as radiating sprays, fibrous aggregates, and narrow bladed crystals within cavities in volcanic basalt. Its typically white to translucent coloration allows light to softly illuminate the crystal surfaces, emphasizing the specimen’s fine texture and naturally sculptural character.

This specimen originates from Maharashtra’s renowned Deccan Traps, one of the world’s most important sources of collectible zeolite minerals. Repeated episodes of volcanic activity created gas cavities within the basalt, which were later filled by mineral-rich fluids. Over time, these protected pockets produced the beautiful zeolite crystal formations for which the region is internationally recognized.

Measuring approximately 1 × 1 × 3.5 inches and weighing 40 grams, this slender specimen is ideal for a mineral cabinet, small display stand, educational collection, or curated India zeolite display.

About Scolecite

Scolecite is a hydrated calcium aluminosilicate mineral belonging to the zeolite group. Its chemical formula is commonly written as CaAl₂Si₃O₁₀·3H₂O. It is recognized for its slender crystals, radiating sprays, delicate fibrous formations, and white to colorless appearance.

The mineral’s name comes from the Greek word skolex, meaning “worm,” referring to the way scolecite can curl when heated. Although visually similar to minerals such as mesolite and natrolite, scolecite has its own distinct chemistry and crystal structure.

Maharashtra is celebrated among mineral collectors for the diverse zeolite specimens recovered from cavities in the ancient basalt flows of the Deccan Traps. Scolecite may occur alongside apophyllite, stilbite, heulandite, calcite, mesolite, and other secondary minerals formed through low-temperature hydrothermal activity.

Because its slender crystals can be delicate, scolecite should be handled carefully and displayed where it will be protected from impact, pressure, and repeated contact.
