About Scolecite

Scolecite is a hydrated calcium aluminosilicate mineral belonging to the zeolite group. Its chemical formula is commonly written as CaAl₂Si₃O₁₀·3H₂O. It is best known for forming slender prismatic or bladed crystals, radiating sprays, fibrous aggregates, and tightly intergrown bundles.

The name scolecite comes from the Greek word skolex, meaning “worm,” referring to the mineral’s tendency to curl when heated. Although it may resemble natrolite or mesolite, scolecite has a distinct chemical composition and crystal structure.

Maharashtra’s Deccan Traps are internationally renowned for producing exceptional zeolite minerals. Ancient basaltic lava flows cooled with gas cavities trapped within them. Later, mineral-rich fluids circulated through these openings and deposited scolecite, apophyllite, stilbite, heulandite, calcite, chalcedony, and other secondary minerals over successive geological stages.

Because scolecite has perfect cleavage and relatively delicate elongated crystals, specimens should be handled carefully and displayed where they will be protected from impacts, pressure, and repeated contact.
