About Scolecite

Scolecite is a hydrated calcium aluminosilicate belonging to the zeolite mineral group. It commonly forms as slender prismatic crystals, fibrous sprays, radiating clusters, and tightly intergrown bundles. Its white coloration and delicate crystal habit can give fine specimens a luminous, almost frozen appearance.

The name “scolecite” comes from the Greek word skolex, meaning worm. This refers to the way the mineral can curl when heated in a blowpipe test—an early identification method that is not recommended for collectible specimens.

Maharashtra lies within the Deccan Traps, an immense volcanic province created by successive basaltic lava flows. Gas cavities preserved within the cooling basalt were later filled by mineral-rich fluids, producing scolecite, apophyllite, stilbite, heulandite, calcite, chalcedony, and other collectible minerals.

Scolecite is relatively delicate and possesses good cleavage. This mounted specimen should be handled by its display base and kept protected from impacts, prolonged soaking, and sudden temperature changes.
