Product Description
A remarkable Scolecite Crystal Cavity in Basalt from Jalgaon, Maharashtra, India, featuring multiple radiating sprays of slender white crystals preserved inside a naturally formed volcanic pocket. The surrounding basalt has been table cut to reveal the hidden mineral cavity while creating a compact, freestanding geological display.
The primary face opens into a tall, irregular cavity bordered by a pale mineral lining and sparkling microcrystalline growth. Inside, several distinct groups of scolecite emerge from different surfaces, giving the specimen exceptional architecture for its compact size.
An impressive radiating spray crowns the upper cavity. Numerous cream-white scolecite blades extend from a concentrated attachment point and spread outward like a crystalline fan. The longest crystals reach across much of the upper opening, displaying straight parallel edges, delicate longitudinal structure, and softly translucent sections.
A second formation rises from the lower center. This group consists of numerous finer, more needle-like scolecite crystals projecting upward from a dense white foundation. Several crystals stand noticeably above the surrounding growth, while shorter needles fill the spaces between them.
Additional scolecite extends into the lower-left recess, where another radiating group follows the contour of the cavity wall. Together, these separate sprays create visual movement from the bottom of the pocket through the center and into the upper crown.
The interior walls are coated with fine white-to-colorless crystalline material that sparkles under directional lighting. This bright lining frames the scolecite and contrasts sharply against the dark gray basalt exterior. Protected recesses deeper inside the cavity reveal further mineral growth and natural shadowing.
The exterior has been broadly cut and shaped, exposing the fine-grained volcanic host while preserving the mineral-bearing interior. Parallel preparation lines remain visible across the gray basalt, giving the piece the appearance of a geological cross-section rather than an unaltered basalt nodule.
One reverse opening exposes an additional pale mineralized section within the host, offering another view into the specimen’s internal structure. A thin green-gray boundary is visible in places between the dark basalt and the white cavity lining.
Measuring approximately 1.75 × 2 × 2.5 inches and weighing 0.35 pounds, this compact specimen combines delicate scolecite sprays, excellent cavity depth, strong light-and-dark contrast, and a stable table-cut presentation.

About Scolecite
Scolecite is a calcium-aluminum silicate mineral belonging to the zeolite group. It commonly develops as slender prismatic or needle-like crystals arranged in radiating sprays, fibrous masses, and rounded aggregates.
The name derives from a Greek word associated with “worm,” referring to the curling behavior scolecite can display when heated. That reaction is a historical identification characteristic and should not be attempted on a collector specimen.
Scolecite is especially admired for the precision and delicacy of its radiating formations. Individual crystals may appear nearly parallel near their base before spreading outward into fans, starbursts, or spherical sprays.
The prominent upper formation on this specimen clearly demonstrates that radiating habit. The individual crystals emerge from a confined attachment point and widen into an open fan across the upper cavity. The finer central cluster illustrates a more needle-like expression of the same mineral.
About the Jalgaon Basalt Cavities
Jalgaon lies within Maharashtra’s extensive Deccan volcanic province, where enormous basalt flows formed through repeated volcanic activity. Gas trapped within the cooling lava created vesicles and larger cavities throughout the rock.
Long after the basalt solidified, mineral-rich fluids circulated through fractures and entered these open spaces. Changes in chemistry, temperature, and pressure allowed secondary minerals—including zeolites, chalcedony, quartz, calcite, and apophyllite-group minerals—to crystallize within the cavities.
This specimen preserves that volcanic relationship particularly well. The dark basalt forms the structural exterior, while the pale cavity lining and delicate scolecite sprays record later mineral growth inside the open pocket.
“Table cut” describes the specimen’s preparation. Portions of the basalt exterior were cut to expose the mineralized cavity and create a stable display profile. The visible saw and preparation lines are expected characteristics of this presentation style.
Scolecite crystals are relatively delicate despite their approximately 5–5.5 hardness. Handle the specimen by the solid basalt exterior, avoid touching the crystal sprays, and remove dust only with a gentle air blower or exceptionally soft dry brush.
