An authentic Merycoidodon (oreodont) jaw fossil from the renowned White River Group of Wyoming, preserving well-defined cheek teeth from one of North America's most recognizable Oligocene mammals. Merycoidodon, commonly referred to as an oreodont, was a sheep-sized herbivorous mammal that roamed North America approximately 34–23 million years ago during the Oligocene Epoch. Despite their superficial resemblance to pigs or sheep, oreodonts represent an extinct lineage with no direct modern descendants.
The preserved molars display exceptional occlusal detail, showing the complex enamel ridges used for processing tough vegetation. The surrounding jawbone is well preserved and provides excellent anatomical context, making this a highly educational and collectible fossil specimen.

About Merycoidodon
Merycoidodon was among the most abundant mammals inhabiting the ancient floodplains of the White River ecosystem. These browsing herbivores lived alongside early horses, rhinoceroses, camel relatives, saber-toothed predators, and other extinct mammals that defined North America's Oligocene landscapes.
Their broad, durable molars evolved to efficiently grind coarse vegetation, and fossil jaws such as this provide valuable insight into the diets and ecology of these prehistoric mammals.
