Massive Apophyllite Crystal with Secondary Apophyllite – Maharashtra, India

Product Description

An extraordinary Apophyllite Crystal Formation from Maharashtra, India, dominated by one exceptionally thick, architectural crystal covered with numerous smaller generations of apophyllite. The oversized central crystal creates a commanding vertical silhouette, while the secondary crystals add depth, sparkle, and fascinating evidence of continued mineral growth.

The primary crystal displays a pale icy-green to nearly colorless appearance with broad, glassy faces and visible internal textures. Across its surfaces and upper termination, smaller transparent to translucent apophyllite crystals emerge in clusters, creating a dramatic “crystals growing upon a crystal” formation. Several of these secondary crystals are sharply defined and highly reflective, contrasting beautifully with the immense central point.

Fine microcrystalline growth, natural iron-toned accents, and areas of dark green mineralized matrix remain visible along portions of the specimen. These contrasting features preserve its natural geological character and emphasize how multiple mineralizing events occurred within the original volcanic cavity.

Measuring approximately 1.5 × 1.5 × 4.25 inches and weighing 0.25 pounds, this tall and unusually substantial apophyllite formation offers exceptional cabinet presence. Its combination of monumental crystal size, secondary crystallization, pale coloration, and complex surface detail makes it especially appealing for advanced collectors of Indian zeolites and Deccan Traps minerals.

About Apophyllite

Apophyllite is the commonly used collector name for a group of hydrated potassium-calcium silicate minerals frequently found within cavities in volcanic basalt. Many specimens from Maharashtra are fluorapophyllite-(K), although precise species-level identification requires appropriate analytical testing.

Apophyllite is celebrated for its brilliant glass-like luster, transparent to translucent crystals, and distinctive tetragonal crystal forms. Crystals may occur as sharply terminated prisms, blocky formations, pyramidal points, or complex clusters. Its basal cleavage can produce pearly internal reflections that enhance its luminous appearance.

Maharashtra’s Deccan Traps represent one of the world’s most famous sources of fine apophyllite and associated secondary minerals. Ancient lava flows cooled with gas cavities trapped inside the basalt. Later, mineral-rich fluids circulated through these openings and deposited apophyllite, stilbite, heulandite, calcite, chalcedony, and other minerals over successive stages of crystallization.

This specimen’s smaller apophyllite crystals growing across a much larger central crystal record more than one episode of mineral deposition. That layered growth history gives the piece both exceptional visual complexity and considerable geological interest.
