About Lapis Lazuli
Lapis lazuli is a naturally occurring metamorphic rock composed primarily of blue lazurite, often accompanied by calcite, pyrite, sodalite, and other minerals. Its celebrated blue color originates largely from lazurite, while white calcite and metallic pyrite may create contrasting patterns within the stone.
Afghanistan has been one of the world’s most historically important sources of fine lapis lazuli for thousands of years. Material from the country has traveled along ancient trade routes and has been fashioned into jewelry, carvings, decorative objects, pigments, and ceremonial artifacts by numerous civilizations.
Before the development of modern synthetic pigments, finely ground lapis lazuli was used to produce natural ultramarine, an exceptionally valuable blue pigment employed in important manuscripts and works of art. Carvings such as this continue that long lapidary tradition while preserving the individual coloration and mineral character of the natural stone.
