An exceptional “Galaxy” Amethyst Geode from Minas Gerais, Brazil, named for its night-sky palette of lavender, violet, smoky gray, silvery white, and scattered golden highlights. Weighing an impressive 11.26 pounds, this substantial formation combines a deep crystallized chamber, dramatic color zoning, broad agate banding, and a rugged natural exterior.
The expansive interior is lined with thousands of sparkling amethyst crystals ranging from pale lilac and soft rose-lavender to deeper violet and smoky purple. Darker crystal-rich areas create the appearance of distant shadows, while lighter quartz formations rise from the cavity like glowing nebulae against a purple night sky.
Scattered warm golden, bronze, and earthy mineralized areas add another layer of visual complexity. Under direct lighting, these warmer zones contrast dramatically with the cooler amethyst and produce flashes resembling stars scattered across the formation. The coloration is consistent with naturally occurring iron-bearing mineralization or surface deposits, although its precise composition has not been analytically confirmed.
The interior is far from flat. Rounded crystal-covered formations project from the lower cavity, while recessed passages and shadowed pockets extend deeper into the geode. This sculptural architecture creates considerable movement and reveals new crystal arrangements as the viewing angle changes.
A polished blue-gray and white chalcedony border outlines the amethyst chamber. This smooth, softly colored band provides a striking transition between the sparkling interior and the preserved dark volcanic exterior. Natural fractures, healed seams, color variations, and preparation-related contacts remain visible around portions of the rim and are part of the specimen’s geological character.
The exterior retains its rugged natural host rock, giving the reverse and sides an understated appearance that contrasts sharply with the brilliant interior. Its cut base allows the specimen to stand upright as a substantial cabinet or statement display.
Measuring approximately 8.5 × 6 × 8 inches and weighing 11.26 pounds, this is a commanding Brazilian geode with exceptional depth, varied crystallization, and memorable galaxy-inspired coloration. Its combination of violet amethyst, silvery quartz, golden mineral accents, blue-gray chalcedony, and deep natural shadows makes it especially compelling under focused display lighting.

About Brazilian Amethyst Geodes
Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz. Its coloration develops when trace iron incorporated into the quartz structure interacts with natural geological irradiation. Differences in iron distribution, oxidation, crystal growth, and later mineral deposition can create multiple shades within a single geode.
The celebrated amethyst geodes of Brazil developed inside cavities in ancient volcanic rock. Silica-rich fluids circulated through these open spaces and gradually deposited layers of chalcedony along the cavity walls. Later stages of crystallization produced the inward-pointing quartz and amethyst crystals visible today.
The polished blue-gray border records these earlier layers of microcrystalline silica. Chalcedony and amethyst share the same primary chemical composition—silicon dioxide—but differ in crystal scale. Chalcedony consists of microscopic intergrowths, while the amethyst forms larger, individually recognizable quartz crystals.
The term “Galaxy” is a specimen-specific nickname inspired by the formation’s celestial mixture of violet, smoky gray, silvery white, golden highlights, and deep shadow. It is a visual description rather than a separate mineral variety or claim of treatment.
Amethyst may gradually lose color after prolonged exposure to intense direct sunlight. Display the specimen away from strong window light and handle it by its solid exterior rather than the crystallized interior.
